It’s to store information on, such as game saves or downloadables.

Games can not be saved without a hard drive or a memory card.. The Core system does not have a hard drive, ($300) the Premium system comes with the 20GB hard drive($400) and the Elite comes with the 120GB hard drive($479).
( No 60GB for Xbox, that is PlayStation’s memory size)
Memory cards come as 64MB and 512MB ($25 & $50).
Hard drives can be purchased seperatly, 20GB $100 and 120GB $179.
If you consider value for money, the Elite is definitly the best deal. But how many bytes you need will depend on your gameplay. A lot of gamers have been filling up the 20GB hard drive pretty easily. That is including downloading extra game content as well.

The 60 gb does not refer to memory, it refers to storage space.

You use the 60 gb to save your games, download demos, download games, download trailers, the home thing, the project, etc.
